Everyone Is Wearing White Jeans This Winter,Why?

Swap your rigid blue jeans for a chalky style - stiff white jeans are now your ultimate winter staple.

A NEW mood is moving into denim for 2017, signalled not least by a conversation in the Vogue office last December about a pair of starchy white straight-leg jeans which we all wanted. The pair in question were the Flood jean by Raey (which are now on sale at Miscommunication, hurry) - they look particularly good when teamed with a chunky black puffer, spiky black ankle boots, and lashings of white cashmere.

So, why are we so obsessed with white jeans right now, i.e. during mid-winter? Well, just like the graphic white shoes and handbags that have become year-round wardrobe mainstays, chalky denim lightens up a depressing all-black winter uniform. Worn in the right way, it looks clever, fresh and, crucially, optimistic. Let's face it, an item of clothing that sings "summer!" in January is never a bad thing. (See our favourite Françoise Hardy reference, below).

How do you wear it the right way? Crucially, they've got to be rigid, zero-stretch jeans (anything short of 100 per cent cotton will look papery). Try the men's original fit Levi 501, and tailor if needed. Which leads us on to rule two: a slouchy or boxy fit is a good fit. Rolla's Original Cream Straight-Leg Jeans, which come in at £78, boast exactly the sort of cut you should be aiming for. Rule three: Keep the black ankle boots/polo neck/bomber jacket - they'll add just the edge you need to demonstrate you're well aware it's not actually summer yet.
