Awami League National Council,2016 starts in Dhaka,Bangladesh

The ruling Awami League's National Council has begun at Dhaka's Suhrawardy Udyan.

The party, set up in 1949 is one of the oldest parties of Bangladesh.

It is now looking for new leadership to support Sheikh Hasina's dream to make Bangladesh a middle income nation by 2021 and a developed country by 2041.

Awami League President and Prime Minister Hasina formally inaugurated the National Council by hoisting the national flag and the party flag to the rendering of the national anthem.

After the inaugural session, a closed door meeting of the party's councillors will be held at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) auditorium in the afternoon.

All eyes are on the grand old party, the new leadership of which will emerge after two days of intense deliberations.

Hasina, who has been heading the Awami League (AL) for the last 35 years, had said recently that she would be 'happy' to retire given the opportunity and if the party, founded by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, manages to find a new leader.

AL leaders, however, insist that there is no alternative of Hasina.

She has made it clear that the council will elect the next batch of leaders, but the party is depending on her to make the decisions.

The much-talked issue ahead of the council is over who will be the general secretary--whether Syed Ashraful Islam will be retained or replaced.

Speculations are also rife about changes in the party's policy making presidium council, national committee and executive committee.

However, AL General Secretary Syed Ashraf has ruled out major changes.

“In a democratic state system, councils are not subjected to sudden or sweeping changes. This is incremental. New leaders are inducted by replacing old or ailing (leaders). This new committee will have both old and young leaders,” he told the media on Friday.

And about rumours over his possible replacement, Syed Ashraf said: “I know what will happen. Nobody other than the prime minister and myself are aware about what is going to happen. You all will know soon."
