Akshay Kumar film 'Rustom' racing towards Rs 100 crore biz

Akshay Kumar has again proved that he is one of a kind in Bollywood. The film, made at a budget of Rs 50 crore, earned as much money withing three days of its release and is likely to ramp up its collection on Day 4 (Monday), which was a holiday on account of Independence Day.

Inspired by the Nanavati murder case and given the typical Akshay Kumar patriotic twist, Rustom released on August 12 to largely positive reviews. Despite the box office clash with director Ashutosh Gowariker’s Mohenjo Daro starring Hrithik Roshan and Pooja Hegde, Rustom managed to rake in the moolah at the box office.

The film’s Friday box office collection was Rs 14.11 crore and it just got better from there. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote, “#Rustom had a FABULOUS Sun… Crosses ₹ 50 cr mark.. Mon [Independence Day holiday] will boost the biz further… SMASH HIT…” He also gave out the numbers, “#Rustom Fri 14.11 cr, Sat 16.43 cr, Sun 19.88 cr. Total: ₹ 50.42 cr. ”

On Monday, the film is expected to continue its positive run and earn between Rs 18-20 crore at the BO. Rustom has also been garnering praises for its intriguing storyline and Akshay Kumar’s performance as a naval officer and a betrayed husband.

The movie found its place among the top five openers of 2016 and secured the fourth position in the list. In fact, Akshay now has three films — Rustom, Airlift and Housefull 3 — on the list.

Rustom has a strong hold on the international market also. It collected $1.24 million [₹ 8.30 cr] overseas. The movie was unstoppable in UAE-GCC. Here’s the overseas breakup: Thu AED 1 million, Fri AED 1.3 million, Sat AED 800,000. Total: AED 3.1 million [₹ 5.65 cr].

Rustom is directed by Tinu Suresh Desai and also stars Ileana D’Cruz, Arjan Bajwa and Esha Gupta. Akshay plays a naval commander in the film who is accused of killing his wife’s lover. It was released over 2,317 screens across cities in India and 550-plus overseas.
